Early in March in the year 1951, four citizens of Harney conceived the idea that Harney should have some means of fire protection
of their own. Cards were
sent to the people of the village and community advising of a meeting to be held the last of March regarding
this matter. It was at this meeting the Harney
Volunteer Fire Company was organized. Meetings were held in a building on the
square in Harney. Fire extinguishers were purchased and distributed in the
community.
The first project was the building of a reservoir, which contains approximately 350,000 gallons of water. In 1954, ground was
broken for the
construction of a fire hall on land obtained from Luther Angell. The building was completed with an engine room,
boiler room and modern fully equipped kitchen.
Dedication of the building was held on June 11, 1955 with the address given
by Governor Theodore R. McKeldin of Maryland.
The first fire truck was purchased in January 1957. It was a G.M.C. chassis 500 gpm pumper equipped with Barton American
Fire Fighting Equipment.
On November 25, 1960, a banquet was held in honor of burning the mortgage, which was paid in full.
In March 1965 the company purchased a 1954 utility truck from Lineboro Fire Company. An addition was also made to the building,
enlarging the kitchen
and adding a recreation room.
In May 1965, an addition to the building was made and in 1966, a 1,400 gallon, 1966 Chevrolet was purchased, equipped with
Barton American Fire
Apparatus. In February 1968, more ground was purchased next to the Fire Hall.
A brush truck, 4-Wheel drive, G.M.C. ¾ ton pickup, with a front mount Barton American Pump, was purchased in April 1969.
This piece is still in service,
known as Brush 115.
With dinners and other fund raisers, the company was able to expand its building in 1965, and again in 1979. In 1972, the company
purchased a Mack Pumper
and sold the 1957 G.M.C. truck.
In 1979, an Army Surplus Jeep was converted into a Utility truck.
A Grumman Chassis, 1,500 gallon Tanker, with a 1,000 gallon pump was dedicated in 1985. This piece is still in service, known
as Tanker 11.
In December of 1996, the company purchased Mack Engine model CF600 with a 1,500 gpm pump, 1,000 gallon tank, and a built
in foam unit, and was placed in
service. This piece replaced the 1972 Mack Pumper and is known as Engine 111.
The company most recently purchased a 1999, Ford F550, 4-Wheel Drive, with a KME body. This unit is known as Special Unit
11.

At first, this village was called Monocacyville. However, the Government, desiring to establish a Post Office, discovered a town
also in Maryland,
bearing the same name. It was at this time the villagers decided to change the name to Harney, in honor of General
Harney.
The year 1824 brought the first store to Harney. It was located along the Harney and Littlestown Road. This store was more of
a trading post with the
Farmers exchanging their produce, such as eggs, poultry and corn for supplies from the store.
